Palo Duro Canyon is one of his special places. People have lived in the canyon, the second largest in the U.S., for 12,000 years. The rocks tell an older story, representing a time span of 240 million years. In more recent centuries, the canyon was a stronghold for the Apache, Kiowa and Comanche tribes.Backpacking is allowed in Palo Duro Canyon, as long as you hike in for at least 30 minutes (kind of a funny rule because everyone hikes at a different speed)! The starting point is the very end of the park, circled in red on the map to the right: Park at the area circled in red, and start backpacking from there.
